Did the CIA have a double agent inside al Qaeda?
A Danish man claims he worked with the CIA to infiltrate al Qaeda as a double agent for years and helped track radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki until the prominent al Qaeda figure was killed in an American drone strike, according to a Danish news report.
The man, who calls himself Morten Storm, provided evidence to the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten that he was a former radical who had been turned by the Danish intelligence service (PET) and later worked with the CIA so closely that he says President Obama knew his name. Storm said he was the one who sent Anwar al-Awlaki, the al Qaeda preacher linked to several American terror plots, a USB stick that contained a tracking device that eventually allowed an American drone to take him out in September 2011.

Among the evidence Storm gave Jyllands-Posten are alleged letters between Storm and Awlaki and what appears to be a secret recording of a conversation between Storm and people he calls PET agents and an officer from the CIA in a swanky Denmark hotel in October 2011. During a private conversation, the alleged CIA officer, identified only as Michael, confirms Storm's work for the PET and CIA and makes the claim that the President is aware of the operation.
However, the purported CIA man maintains that Awlaki was killed thanks to a parallel mission and not because of Storm's work.
Storm said he was a radical, militant Islamist in the United Kingdom in the mid-2000s who appeared at at least one anti-American rally, but was turned by PET in 2006.
In a statement from PET's chief, the Danish spy organization said that as a matter of policy it does not publicly confirm sensitive information about its operations, nor does it deny incorrect information.
"It should be noted, however, that in no way does PET engage in or support operations aimed at taking civilian lives. Consequently, PET has not contributed in connection to the military operation that led to the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen," the statement said.
The CIA declined to comment and a White House official did not immediately return requests for comment on this report.
Storm told the newspaper he wanted to come forward now because he was proud of the work he had done and wanted some recognition. He reportedly also wanted his family to know he had been fighting terrorism for years.
Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer and contributor to The Daily Beast, said that for the most part, Storm's account seems plausible.
"This story is consistent with how you would infiltrate a terrorist group like al Qaeda," Riedel told ABC News. "You need someone who's a plausible recruit... He's the perfect kind of infiltrator, perfect kind of plant inside of al Qaeda."
Riedel said that as good as America's technological capabilities are in fighting terrorism, there's little substitute for having a man inside.
"The drones themselves are amazing technical phenomena, but the information that leads the drones to the target is what really matters," Riedel said. "In the end it's human beings and the little technical means they can put on somebody to track them down."

Tucked into the U.S. Supreme Court?s agenda this fall is a little-known case that could upend your ability to resell everything from your grandmother?s antique furniture to your iPhone 4.
At issue in Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons is the first-sale doctrine in copyright law, which allows you to buy and then sell things like electronics, books, artwork and furniture, as well as CDs and DVDs, without getting permission from the copyright holder of those products.
A Supreme Court case could limit the resale of goods made overseas but sold in America.
Under the doctrine, which the Supreme Court has recognized since 1908, you can resell your stuff without worry because the copyright holder only had control over the first sale.
Put simply, though Apple Inc. AAPL -2.21% ?has the copyright on the iPhone and Mark Owen has it on the book ?No Easy Day,? you can still sell your copies to whomever you please whenever you want without retribution.
That?s being challenged now for products that are made abroad, and if the Supreme Court upholds an appellate court ruling, it would mean that the copyright holders of anything you own that has been made in China, Japan or Europe, for example, would have to give you permission to sell it.
?It means that it?s harder for consumers to buy used products and harder for them to sell them,? said Jonathan Band, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, who filed a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of the American Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries and the Association for Research Libraries. ?This has huge consumer impact on all consumer groups.?

?It would be absurd to say anything manufactured abroad can?t be bought or sold here,? said Marvin Ammori, a First Amendment lawyer and Schwartz Fellow at the New American Foundation who specializes in technology issues.
The case stems from Supap Kirtsaeng?s college experience. A native of Thailand, Kirtsaeng came to America in 1997 to study at Cornell University. When he discovered that his textbooks, produced by Wiley, were substantially cheaper to buy in Thailand than they were in Ithaca, N.Y., he rallied his Thai relatives to buy the books and ship them to him in the United States.

Cameron backs referendum on new Britain-EU deal
BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - A referendum on Britain's ties with the European Union would be the best way of agreeing a fresh settlement with the 27-member bloc, Prime Minister David Cameron said on Tuesday, as pressure mounts within his party for a vote.
The Conservative Party's restive "eurosceptic" right wing is clamouring to claw back powers from Brussels. Some want a simple vote on staying in the EU or leaving, fearing that the party could lose votes to the anti-Europe UK Independence Party at the 2015 election.
Cameron says Britain should remain in the EU, Britain's biggest trading partner, but renegotiate terms as the 17 members of the EU's currency union redefine their own ties to tackle their sovereign debt crisis.
Speaking to the BBC, Cameron gave no time frame for a vote or any indication of what could be asked at a referendum. The prime minister has said he is against an "in/out" plebiscite.
"When we achieve that fresh settlement, it needs consent, either at a referendum or a general election," Cameron said on the sidelines of the Conservative Party conference in the English city of Birmingham.
"Frankly, a referendum is obviously the cleanest, neatest and most sensible way of doing that."
Europe has divided the centre-right Conservatives for decades and helped to bring down the party's last two prime ministers, Margaret Thatcher and John Major.
Cameron has promised a referendum after 2015 on any future EU treaty, and has pledged to avoid getting entangled in costly solutions to the euro zone debt crisis and to try to repatriate some powers from Brussels.
But some Conservatives want Britain to renegotiate its relationship with Europe now, disappointed by Cameron's U-turn on a pre-election pledge for a vote on the Lisbon Treaty.
"Europe is changing - the euro zone is going to integrate .... it is necessary if they are going to save the single currency, but I think that does open up the opportunity for Britain to get a fresh and a better settlement with Europe," Cameron said.
"I am committed to making sure we do everything to set that out in the run-up to the next election, to get that fresh settlement and then seek fresh consent for that settlement."
On Sunday, Cameron threatened to scupper EU budget talks unless other members of the bloc agreed to "proper control" of spending, without specifying what arrangement Britain would accept.
He also lent his support to a proposal for two EU budgets - one for the euro zone and another for cash-strapped Britain and the other nations outside the single currency.
The prime minister used Britain's veto in December to block an EU-wide pact designed to help the euro zone, a move that delighted eurosceptics in his party but dismayed his Liberal Democrat coalition partners and other European leaders.
A deal was eventually agreed without Britain.

Ah, the third entry in the Once Upon A Time In China film series. The thing that plagues all film series is that once you get to the third one, it?s a matter of what can you do that is fresh and new. Well, Tsui Hark decided that he was going to add lion dancing and I mean a lot of it. He knew he wasn?t going to be able to top the first two in terms of entertainment value so he just opted to make a decent solid flick. Did he succeed? The answer depends on how much you like lion dancing. Do you like to watch people holding lion heads and moving the lion head up and down which creates the illusion of the lion dancing? Do you like A LOT of lion dancing? Do you like when Jet Li holds a lion head and moves the head up and down? Oh, you like to watch Jet Li fight one on one with someone on film instead? Well, you may be very disappointed. But at least Jet Li returns as Wong Fei Hung with Rosamund Kwan back as 13th Aunt and Max Mok also comes back as Leung Foon. So you got that.
What is this installment about? Well, turmoil is still afoot in China so to try and instill some pride and display the beauty of Chinese martial arts, Empress Dowager and Governor Li Hongzhang decide that they will hold a lion dance competition and invite all in the country to try and become the ?Lion Dance King?. Wong Fei Hung with 13th Aunt and Leung Foon arrive in Beijing to visit Fei Hung?s father. When they arrive, they meet with a Russian man from 13th Aunt?s past which frustrates Fei Hung because he keeps on trying to get her attention. This romantic subplot is one addition that makes this film stand out from the previous two. Fei Hung finds out a bit later that his father was attacked by a martial artist named Chiu Tin-Bak and his sidekick Clubfoot which further escalates Fei Hung?s behavior.
The lion dance groups who are competing in the lion dance tournament meet up and start fighting which Foon and another student of Fei Hung?s participates in and Clubfoot gets in on the skirmish and gets injured which then leads to Clubfoot being abandoned by Chiu-Tin Bak. Fei Hung finds him injured and eventually takes care of him and Clubfoot becomes his student as a result. 13th Aunt finds that the Russian man she knows is planning to assassinate Li Hongzhang during the Lion Dance competition, complicating matters. I have to say a few things about this film. First, if you want to show the beauty of martial arts, wouldn?t you want to hold a MARTIAL ARTS competition instead? Second, the fight scenes are nowhere near as fun to watch in this installment than the previous two. There is one scene when Fei Hung interrupts the lion dance groups who are fighting each other and one of the masters decides he?s going to fight Fei Hung one on one. Alright! This is going to be a sweet fi? wait, Fei Hung just does one kick? Is that it? Oh, come on!!!
In my opinion, the best fight scene is the one that introduces Clubfoot which doesn?t even include Wong Fei Hung. So you mean to tell me that the lead character doesn?t even get a good fight scene? There was a lot of potential for a fight scene between Wong Fei Hung and the Russian man but nothing and the fight scene that Wong has with Chiu is um, pretty pathetic. Chiu is an overconfident blowhard. I just had to add that. I will say that the political themes aren?t as in your face as the previous two and the music still does its job but it doesn?t help the film as much like the previous two. The performances were as good as you can get but when the fight scenes in the previous two are pretty much perfect and this installment just becomes lazy, that?s not excusable. There are some decent aspects to this film but overall, a huge step down from the previous two. You can still watch this film to complete the Once Upon A Time In China film series but if you skipped it, I wouldn?t lose any sleep over it.

The problem shows on the photographs as a purple flare on the edge of a picture or as an actual purple spot in the main frame of the picture. Apple?s support article addresses these issues and claims there is nothing to worry about.
Symptoms A purplish or other colored flare, haze, or spot is imaged from out-of-scene bright light sources during still image or video capture.
Resolution Most small cameras, including those in every generation of iPhone, may exhibit some form of flare at the edge of the frame when capturing an image with out-of-scene light sources. This can happen when a light source is positioned at an angle (usually just outside the field of view) so that it causes a reflection off the surfaces inside the camera module and onto the camera sensor. Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should minimize or eliminate the effect.
The question is how come we didn't experience this particular problem with other iPhone models? There is a thread in the iMore forums with examples of the problem. If you are experiencing it, make sure to drop by and leave a comment or even a sample picture. Do you think Apple?s resolution is acceptable given that we haven?t experienced this problem with any other iPhone cameras in the past? The idea of shielding your lens with your hand while taking a picture seems a little bit clumsy to me. Thankfully, I can?t seem to be able to reproduce the problem even when taking a photograph with a light source outside of the field of view, what about you?

Happy Thanksgiving - The Family Tree of Thanks
This Thanksgiving, we have so very much to be grateful for in our little family, with friends and our extended family from coast to coast. Our lives are filled with irresistible and sweet daily bits of joy mixed in with challenges brought our way to teach us how to navigate the wavy waters that are just simply a part of life.
For us, this year is particularly sweet as we find ourselves so very far away from our families, forging out on our own and so very full of excitement about what the future brings. It?s been a rugged year that we have been totally in love with, even through the most awkward of times.
So, we wanted to make something that we could place in a special spot in our house where each of us could see it every day and remember how much our family has grown.
It started as a Fall painting project and grew into the Family Tree of Thanks.
Tomorrow, when we sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with new friends here at our home in Nova Scotia, we?ll all look across the table at each other and know that life is particularly delicious. Our arms are open wide and we are ready for all that it brings and we bring to life.

New Kane County Budget Proposal Would Freeze Property Tax Levy
After the Kane County Board Finance Committee Chairman proposed a 2013 budget that would raise the property tax levy in spite of declining real estate values, Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay countered with her own budget proposal that freezes the levy on existing property for the second consecutive year.
"I could not stand by and watch an irresponsible budget increase the burden on the taxpayers," said McConnaughay, Republican candidate for state senate in the 33rd District. "When property owners are seeing values go down it is unconscionable to raise their taxes, especially without any coherent reason why."
County Finance Committee Chairman Jim Mitchell wrote a budget that increased the county tax levy in spite of a 6.8 percent decrease in assessed valuation in the county. Mitchell said the tax hike would pay for across-the-board salary increases and other unspecified spending increases.?
"During this prolonged recession Kane County has cut spending and headcount, made government more efficient and sought to reduce, not raise, the burden on the public, and that is what we must continue to do."
McConnaughay introduced her alternative budget, which freezes the levy on existing property, in a meeting of the Board's Executive Committee on Wednesday, saying the Finance Committee had had their chance to produce an acceptable budget. The Executive Committee passed McConnaughay?s flat-levy unanimously.
"I am gratified that the committee unanimously agreed that we could not increase the burden on property tax payers," said McConnaughay. "I am just astounded that this tax hike plan was allowed to get this far and required the drafting of an alternative budget to protect the public."
The full county board must still vote on the new budget plan before it is final.
