AFP - Iraqi Kurdistan will export oil via federal pipelines until September 15, an official said on Saturday, extending a one-month confidence-building measure amid a row with the central government in Baghdad.
The northern autonomous three-province region had halted exports for several months on April 1 over $1.5 billion it said was owed to foreign oil companies working in the region that Baghdad had allegedly withheld.
"Kurdistan will continue exporting oil until September 15," an official in the Kurdish natural resources ministry said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Oil exports were originally resumed on August 7, after a four-month suspension.
The central government and the Kurdish authorities in Arbil are at odds over issues including Kurdistan's refusal to seek approval from Baghdad for oil contracts it has awarded to foreign firms, and over a swathe of disputed territory in northern Iraq.
Baghdad says all oil deals must go through the federal oil ministry, and it regards any that do not as illegal.
If you lead a sedentary life you risk building up large amounts of visceral fat in your body.
WHAT IS VISCERAL FAT?
Visceral fat surrounds your vital organs, the fat is located in the abdominal cavity (stomach area).
According to researchers from Duke University Medical Center, exercise can significantly reduce the amount of visceral fat you carry around. The more exercise you do, the more of this type of dangerous fat you will lose. Researchers in this study said that extra exercise can reverse the amount you have, while some moderate exercise can stop your visceral fat mounting up.
If, on the other hand, you remain inactive, more likely than not you will pile on the weight at a rate of four pounds per year, say researchers.
The more visceral fat you carry around the higher your chances of developing insulin resistance (leading to type two diabetes), heart disease and other metabolic syndromes.
Visceral fat is not the fat that lies just under your skin, that type is called subcutaneous fat. Visceral fat is deep inside.
Journal of Applied Physiology. Lead author, Dr Cris Slentz, said, "In our study, the control group that did not exercise saw a sizable and significant 8.6 percent increase in visceral fat in only six months. We also found that a modest exercise program equivalent to a brisk 30-minute walk six times a week can prevent accumulation of visceral fat, while even more exercise can actually reverse the amount of visceral fat.Until we are able to prevent the weight many dieters regain following short-term dieting success, we should place a greater national emphasis toward prevention. It will be a challenge to change the message from 'exercise now to lose weight' to 'exercise now so in five years you won't be 20 pounds heavier.'"
The team studied 175 men and women, they were all overweight and led sedentary lives - they were all beginning to show signs of lipid problems. Four groups were created and the 175 people were placed into them at random. Each group carried out different levels of activity/inactivity:
a. No exercise at all. b. Low dose moderate intensity activity (walking 12 miles per week c. Low dose vigorous intensity activity (12 miles jogging per week) d. High dose vigorous intensity activity (20 miles jogging each week)
All 175 people were told not to alter their diets. The aim of the study was to see what impact exercise alone might have.
The whole trial lasted six months for the couch potatoes (inactive ones) and eight months for the other three groups (the active group were given a two-month start to get them fit enough to do the trial).
All activity was supervised.
Computed Tomography (CT) was used at the beginning and end of the trial (to determine the extent and distribution of fat change).
Slentz found there was no significant difference in visceral fat levels among the low exercise groups. He concluded that mild exercise helps stop the increase, but does not reduce. The inactive group experienced increases in visceral fat levels.
He found that the more people exercised, and the higher their intensity, the faster they lost their excess visceral fat. He also added that jogging 17 to 20 miles a week may seem like a lot. However, all the participants were soon able to run those amounts each week quite comfortably.
The most active group saw visceral fat levels drop by 6.9% in six months, subcutaneous fat levels dropped by 7%.

Elgin James is the writer and director of ?Little Birds,? a 2009 Sundance Institute Screenwriters and Directors Lab project and an Official Selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Below, James details his personal transformation since participating at the Labs and chronicles the journey to completing his film, which opens in New York on August 29. Click here to see when the film is coming to your city.
I've been out of prison for a few months now, and the first question people ask is ?How scary was it?? Going to the Sundance Labs was scarier. Prison operated on a language I understood and had once been fluent in. But the Labs were fueled by the very thing I'd spent my life trying to deny and bury: vulnerability. To be successful in the Labs I was going to have to tear down the walls I?d built and learn to express myself with something besides violence.
Going in I knew so little about filmmaking that I had to ask Artistic Director Gyula Gazdag what a ?gaffer? was. After he answered, I raised my hand again and asked ?What about a ?grip??? He and the other Advisors taught me to utilize what I did know. That growing up punk rock would help me sense when a scene was feeling too neat, too clean. To tap into my gut to know when something was inauthentic. They gave me a new language to express myself and I learned that using art to articulate the wreckage I felt inside was more honest than rage, because it allowed me to get to the hurt and loss underneath.
But the Labs were scary. It felt like being lovingly wrapped in soft cotton and then thrown off a cliff. You?re pushed past your limits and forced to confront your weaknesses. And for me that meant more than filmmaking. Sitting with Robert Redford in the meal tent after everyone else had left, he helped me take a look at my lifelong relationship with violence. He broke down that everything positive in my life stemmed from letting down my guard and being open.?That the good things in my life all stemmed from love. And that the violence and negativity I was still too stubborn to reject had only caused me more misery.
That afternoon I took a vow of non-violence. I swore to never raise my fist or my voice to another human being. I'd gone to the Labs as a child, and I came out an artist.?
Every film that's ever made it to the screen has had its obstacles. Little Birds is no different. After I came home from the Labs, a dozen FBI agents arrested me outside my home on a five-year-old gang related charge.?
I?d helped build the gang as a teenager because I was looking for a sense of family.? Ironically, it took leaving the gang to truly find my tribe. When I was brought into my arraignment in handcuffs and leg irons, my Little Birds producers were sitting in the courtroom. When I was released on bond the first people I contacted were Michelle Satter, Ilyse McKimmie, Anne Lai, and Cullen Conly from the Sundance Feature Film program. Robert Redford, and a number of my Sundance Advisors rallied on my behalf. And when it seemed Little Birds would never get made now, my Advisor Catherine Hardwicke invited me to Venice where we sat down with a calendar and nailed down when I?d most likely go to prison. Then we worked backwards to figure out when I?d need to shoot, how long I?d get to edit, and hopefully, fingers crossed, if I might stay out long enough to make the Sundance film Festival.
We went into production on Little Birds, and while that adventure could be it's own dozen blog entries, suffice to say I realized filmmaking is putting words on paper trying to clumsily express yourself in scene headings and dialogue, and then beautiful, brilliant people come and add their own blood and sweat. Turning your idea into flesh and fabric, and beautiful 2:35 framing, and electricity, and sound, and rough cuts, and even the food to fuel us all, each part of the machine equally as important as the others. Suddenly the words you once typed belong to all of you and are lifted and elevated into art.??
Your only job as the director is to lead the charge. And I could only do so because of what I?d learned at the Labs. On the set I kept a huge binder with me at all times.? Inside the binder was everything my Advisors Joan Darling, Ed Harris, Catherine Hardwicke, Keith Gordon, and Joan Tewksbury had ever said to me. And when in trouble, if I couldn't find an answer in their words, I did exactly what they had taught me?I listened to my gut.
Little Birds premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance in January 2011, and I got to be there. It felt like coming home. The Sundance Feature Film Program had changed my life, and all I wanted was to reward their faith in me and show that they had backed the right horse. After the Festival I was sentenced to a year and a day in prison and began serving my sentence. Little Birds was sold when I was incarcerated, and Millennium Entertainment have graciously waited until I was paroled to release it.?
Which means Little Birds comes out this August 29th. It's the story of two 15-year-old girls and the last few days of their friendship. And my two leads give incredibly fearless performances. Directing Juno Temple felt like holding your best friend's hand while they lean out over a ledge. Her performance so dangerous that I felt if I didn't hold on tight enough she would dive right off. While Juno and I had worked for nearly two years together and the film was built around her, Kay Panabaker was cast only a week before we started shooting. But she immediately staked her ground, opened her soul, and gave such a brave, beautiful performance?the cool, quiet waters beneath Juno?s flame.?
The film became as much their DNA as my own, along with the rest of the actors and crew who sacrificed so much to make this little film for no money but a lot of sweat. It?s scary to be about to let Little Birds out into the world. But overcoming fear has blessed me with finding my place in the world, learning a new language to express myself, and most importantly, finally finding my tribe.?

LA ramps up with huge trade, but this team has plenty of hurdles

Adian Gonzalez, 30, brings solid production, great defense and a Mexican heritage that should make him a big plus for the Dodgers, NBCSports.com contributor Tony DeMarco writes.

For all the hype created and long-term expense added, the Los Angeles Dodgers' talent/payroll accumulation guarantees them exactly nothing. Not for the rest of this season. And not beyond 2012.
And nobody knows it better than manager Don Mattingly.
"We don't think that we're going to show up and win, just because we got new guys," Mattingly said. "We're pretty realistic. We've got to play, and we know it."
We've never seen this big of a roster-altering deal this late in a season. Last week's blockbuster deal with the Red Sox rendered the July 31 non-waivers deadline irrelevant, and the Dodgers' talent grab since the All-Star break has grown their booklet of new player biographies to 25 pages, front and back.
And to ask a dramatically made-over roster, with eight new players added in the past six weeks, to put everything together, erase a short deficit in the standings and earn a playoff spot might be a stretch.
"I think we all know that we're in a short-term, short-run, sprint situation, and anything can happen ? no matter what kind of guys you have playing," Mattingly said. "To me, our challenge is what kind of baseball are we going to play? What are we going to be?"
The immediate answer hasn't been pretty. The Dodgers arrived at Coors Field on Monday off two home games following the mega-deal, and by the time they left town, were facing a list of sobering issues.
We're not just talking about 10-0 and 8-4 losses before a sweep-avoiding 10-8 victory Wednesday tainted by the Rockies' seven-run bottom of the eighth.
Matt Kemp bruised a knee, hurt his jaw and dented the center-field wall on a scary-looking attempt at Josh Rutledge's triple Monday, but he should be back soon enough a day or so.
Closer Kenley Jansen again is dealing with a heart-related issue that has sidelined him indefinitely. Concern was raised Monday, when he came into the blowout and quickly added to the deficit. After not pitching for five days, he didn't have his usual velocity, and was knocked around for four runs in 2/3 innings. Nobody knows when we'll see him on the mound again.
There also is concern that Chad Billingsley's latest elbow issue might shut him down for the rest of the season, costing the Dodgers their most-effective starter of late. Before going on the disabled list, Billingsley had gone 6-0 with a 1.80 ERA.
You know how crucial those two losses could be when Mattingly says, "it's still going to get back to our pitching. We have to pitch well enough every day to keep us in games." Look for the Dodgers to try to make another trade, although at this point, there isn't much left to acquire.
And one more thing. Make no mistake ? the Rockies, Giants and rest of the National League will be gunning for a team that has picked up the "Yankees of the West" tag. Why, the Rockies' Jim Tracy managed the Dodgers' series as if it was his team's playoffs.
Facing deficits of 3 1/2 games in the NL West and 1 1/2 games in the wild-card race, the Dodgers' final five weeks will bring a very challenging schedule ? more so than those of the Giants, Pirates and Braves.
Unlike the Giants, who will stay entirely within the NL West after this weekend's series against the Cubs, the Dodgers will face a crucial 10-game, out-of-division stretch Sept. 13-23: four games vs. St. Louis, three in Washington, and three in Cincinnati. The Dodgers also have six more cracks at the Giants: Sept. 7-9 in AT&T Park, and a season-ending series Oct. 1-3 in Dodger Stadium.
In contrast, the Braves have only two series remaining against playoff contenders: at home Sept. 14-16 against the Nationals and a season-ending series in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates already are done with the Cardinals, and other than that season-ending series against the Braves, will play only six games against a playoff contender: home-and-home series with the Reds.
