DeMarco: Despite the hype, Dodgers are no lock

LA ramps up with huge trade, but this team has plenty of hurdles

For all the hype created and long-term expense added, the Los Angeles Dodgers' talent/payroll accumulation guarantees them exactly nothing. Not for the rest of this season. And not beyond 2012.

And nobody knows it better than manager Don Mattingly.

"We don't think that we're going to show up and win, just because we got new guys," Mattingly said. "We're pretty realistic. We've got to play, and we know it."

We've never seen this big of a roster-altering deal this late in a season. Last week's blockbuster deal with the Red Sox rendered the July 31 non-waivers deadline irrelevant, and the Dodgers' talent grab since the All-Star break has grown their booklet of new player biographies to 25 pages, front and back.

And to ask a dramatically made-over roster, with eight new players added in the past six weeks, to put everything together, erase a short deficit in the standings and earn a playoff spot might be a stretch.

"I think we all know that we're in a short-term, short-run, sprint situation, and anything can happen ? no matter what kind of guys you have playing," Mattingly said. "To me, our challenge is what kind of baseball are we going to play? What are we going to be?"

The immediate answer hasn't been pretty. The Dodgers arrived at Coors Field on Monday off two home games following the mega-deal, and by the time they left town, were facing a list of sobering issues.

We're not just talking about 10-0 and 8-4 losses before a sweep-avoiding 10-8 victory Wednesday tainted by the Rockies' seven-run bottom of the eighth.

Matt Kemp bruised a knee, hurt his jaw and dented the center-field wall on a scary-looking attempt at Josh Rutledge's triple Monday, but he should be back soon enough a day or so.

Closer Kenley Jansen again is dealing with a heart-related issue that has sidelined him indefinitely. Concern was raised Monday, when he came into the blowout and quickly added to the deficit. After not pitching for five days, he didn't have his usual velocity, and was knocked around for four runs in 2/3 innings. Nobody knows when we'll see him on the mound again.

There also is concern that Chad Billingsley's latest elbow issue might shut him down for the rest of the season, costing the Dodgers their most-effective starter of late. Before going on the disabled list, Billingsley had gone 6-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

You know how crucial those two losses could be when Mattingly says, "it's still going to get back to our pitching. We have to pitch well enough every day to keep us in games." Look for the Dodgers to try to make another trade, although at this point, there isn't much left to acquire.

And one more thing. Make no mistake ? the Rockies, Giants and rest of the National League will be gunning for a team that has picked up the "Yankees of the West" tag. Why, the Rockies' Jim Tracy managed the Dodgers' series as if it was his team's playoffs.

Facing deficits of 3 1/2 games in the NL West and 1 1/2 games in the wild-card race, the Dodgers' final five weeks will bring a very challenging schedule ? more so than those of the Giants, Pirates and Braves.

Unlike the Giants, who will stay entirely within the NL West after this weekend's series against the Cubs, the Dodgers will face a crucial 10-game, out-of-division stretch Sept. 13-23: four games vs. St. Louis, three in Washington, and three in Cincinnati. The Dodgers also have six more cracks at the Giants: Sept. 7-9 in AT&T Park, and a season-ending series Oct. 1-3 in Dodger Stadium.

In contrast, the Braves have only two series remaining against playoff contenders: at home Sept. 14-16 against the Nationals and a season-ending series in Pittsburgh.

The Pirates already are done with the Cardinals, and other than that season-ending series against the Braves, will play only six games against a playoff contender: home-and-home series with the Reds.

Resembling a perforated drape, the new public park mitigates an awkward edge condition which allows private actions to exist in the public domain.

Edge conditions in urban cities often create neglected public spaces that attract temporal activities of various kinds for a wide spectrum of people. ?the REAL estate? project offers a new typology for public space that examines the boundaries between public and private domains in the urban landscape.

The site is located in the city of Bat-Yam, a Mediterranean city one of the most densely populated inIsrael. Most of the residents live in modern housing projects that were built in the fifties for new immigrants. The project is situated at the end of a wide modernist residential street that unexpectedly terminates by a massive concrete wall that functions as an acoustic barrier for a crossing highway. This edge condition is the caused for a long strip of neglected ?junk? space which is used by the local residents for dumping trash, bonfire spots for Lag BaHomer (a Jewish holiday), drug activities, walking dogs, and other illicit behavior.

The project?s main fa?ade to the residential street is a see-through wall with a wooden entry gate to an outdoor room lying between the existing barrier wall and the new wall. Both are at the same height but one is obstructive and the other is inviting. Bold pink neon sign written; ?the REAL estate?, suggesting that the real assets of dense urban cities are outdoor public spaces.

The surface of the park is laid with a continuous fabric formed concrete ?blanket? that wraps over the existing acoustic barrier wall. The continuous surface starts on a man-made horizontal landscape and changes gradually to a sloped vertical wall. In this surface are seven cut-out wood niches that perform as intimate private spaces in the public urban landscape. Each niche takes the form of the human body as a single, couple or a group.

We first saw LG's 55-inch OLED TV at last year's CES, where it drew a fair share of oohs and ahhs at the company's press event. In May, the tentative pricing info for the European market was released, but this set's future in the US remained TBD. Fast forward to IFA 2012, and we're in front of this giant again -- but this time, it's sporting 3D. True, at 55 inches, it's no goliath compared to the 84-inch TVs we've seen this week from Sony, Toshiba and even LG, but the company claims this 55-inch model is the largest OLED HDTV available, and its carbon fiber backing and ultra-thin 4mm profile are certainly the markings of a high-end setup.

During LG's booth tour today, we had a chance to sneak a peek at the now 3D-capable set, which otherwise looks quite similar to the version we saw at CES, albeit with a bit more polish. In order to achieve a 4-millimeter profile, the set packs all of its connectivity in the base module. There's also an Invisible Connection module on order, which hooks up to the TV through a proprietary optical connector and transparent cable, should you wish to mount the display on your wall. Naturally, 3D content wasn't as sharp as its 2D counterpart, but the OLED looked great regardless. With its ultra-thin design, it's surely meant for consumers who care about aesthetics perhaps even more than image quality, but if you can stomach the €9,000 price tag, this is one fine get. People merge supernatural and scientific beliefs when reasoning with the unknown, study shows

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Reliance on supernatural explanations for major life events, such as death and illness, often increases rather than declines with age, according to a new psychology study from The University of Texas at Austin.

The study, published in the June issue of Child Development, offers new insight into developmental learning.

"As children assimilate cultural concepts into their intuitive belief systems -- from God to atoms to evolution -- they engage in coexistence thinking," said Cristine Legare, assistant professor of psychology and lead author of the study. "When they merge supernatural and scientific explanations, they integrate them in a variety of predictable and universal ways."

Legare and her colleagues reviewed more than 30 studies on how people (ages 5-75) from various countries reason with three major existential questions: the origin of life, illness and death. They also conducted a study with 366 respondents in South Africa, where biomedical and traditional healing practices are both widely available.

As part of the study, Legare presented the respondents with a variety of stories about people who had AIDS. They were then asked to endorse or reject several biological and supernatural explanations for why the characters in the stories contracted the virus.

According to the findings, participants of all age groups agreed with biological explanations for at least one event. Yet supernatural explanations such as witchcraft were also frequently supported among children (ages 5 and up) and universally among adults.

Among the adult participants, only 26 percent believed the illness could be caused by either biology or witchcraft. And 38 percent split biological and scientific explanations into one theory. For example: "Witchcraft, which is mixed with evil spirits, and unprotected sex caused AIDS." However, 57 percent combined both witchcraft and biological explanations. For example: "A witch can put an HIV-infected person in your path."

Legare said the findings contradict the common assumption that supernatural beliefs dissipate with age and knowledge.

"The findings show supernatural explanations for topics of core concern to humans are pervasive across cultures," Legare said. "If anything, in both industrialized and developing countries, supernatural explanations are frequently endorsed more often among adults than younger children."

The results provide evidence that reasoning about supernatural phenomena is a fundamental and enduring aspect of human thinking, Legare said.

"The standard assumption that scientific and religious explanations compete should be re-evaluated in light of substantial psychological evidence," Legare said. "The data, which spans diverse cultural contexts across the lifespan, shows supernatural reasoning is not necessarily replaced with scientific explanations following gains in knowledge, education or technology."

Obama team launches critique of Ryan before speech

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) ? Even before Paul Ryan takes the stage at the Republican convention, President Barack Obama's campaign is seeking to cast the GOP running mate as "out of step" with American voters.

The Obama campaign released an online video Wednesday targeting Ryan as a politician from a "bygone era." The video criticizes Ryan for being the architect of a budget that would overhaul Medicare and for seeking to defund Planned Parenthood.

Ryan, the Wisconsin congressman, is due to address the GOP convention Wednesday night. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will speak to delegates in Tampa, Fla., and a prime-time audience across the country, on Thursday.

Ryan is considered a hero of conservatives. His addition to the Republican ticket has energized voters and even Romney himself. The buttoned-up GOP presidential nominee often appears more at ease when campaigning alongside the youthful Ryan.

Obama is traveling Wednesday to Charlottesville, Va., the last stop on his two-day trip to counter the GOP convention message and to appeal to younger voters in college towns.

Both parties were pushing forward with their political plans while closely monitoring Hurricane Isaac, which arrived in Louisiana late Tuesday. Republicans had largely canceled the first day of their convention as Isaac appeared bound for Tampa. White House officials said they were monitoring the storm but, as of early Wednesday, had no plans to adjust the president's travel plans.

Obama on Tuesday made stops at Iowa State University and Colorado State University, where he reminded students returning to class that they hold a unique power to determine the election.

"I just want all of you to understand your power. Don't give it away ? not when you're young," Obama told about 13,000 people gathered in Colorado. "Right now, America is counting on you. And I'm counting on you."

In Colorado and Iowa, Obama told the students they had much at stake in the Nov. 6 presidential election, panning Romney as a candidate without a plan to move the country forward. "Last week my opponents' campaign went so far as to write you off as a lost generation. That's you according to them," the president said in Iowa, referring to a Romney news release last week that referred to college students as the "Obama Economy's Lost Generation."

"What they hope is that by telling you these things, you'll get discouraged and you'll just stay home this time," Obama said in Ames, Iowa. "But you can't believe it. I don't believe it."

Romney's campaign dismissed Obama's remarks, saying he had "brought the same policies to Iowa that have failed to help young Americans across the country" and left many of them "facing higher unemployment, mounting debt, rising costs and fewer opportunities."

Obama's campaign had hoped the president would speak Wednesday at the University of Virginia. But the school rejected their request, saying it would disrupt classes on the second day of the semester. Obama was instead scheduled to speak in a public area near the university.

Think back to two moments from the 2005 NFL Draft: Cedric Benson?s tearful outburst when he was chosen No. 4 pick overall by the Chicago Bears, and Aaron Rodgers sitting in the green room for hours, waiting to hear his name called.

Rodgers did not cry, or at least ESPN did not capture any tears in what had to be a difficult moment. But good things come to those who wait, and Green Bay selecting Rodgers 24th overall was a blessing in disguise.

Seven years later, Rodgers and Benson unite for what will likely be the starting backfield in Green Bay?s offense.

Their first game together last Thursday night in Cincinnati was successful, with Benson carrying the ball six times for 38 yards. However, the Packers? leading rusher was actually Rodgers with six carries for 52 yards and a pair of touchdowns on scrambles.

When Rodgers recently said the Packers need to show they can run the ball, it is unlikely he had himself in mind. His stance has taken on a much different tone from July when he replied ?Do we need to?? when asked about being able to run the ball.

His initial response was the right one. After one of the most prolific offensive seasons in NFL history, why would you start delegating to a player with a checkered past like Benson? Coach Mike McCarthy has history and great results on his side to avoid just that.

Green Bay?s unique QB-driven offense
Quarterbacks want the ball in their hands, and McCarthy puts the ball in Rodgers? hands often.

Rodgers averages 39.4 drop backs per start (passes, sacks and runs), which is the second highest average in NFL history (min. 60 starts). As shown in Table 1, only Daunte Culpepper has averaged more.

When Green Bay rushed for a season-high 138 yards against Oakland last year, it was the first game all season where Rodgers did not have a passer rating over 100.0. It was also the first time he did not complete at least 60 percent of his passes. Rodgers was 17 of 30 (56.7 percent) with a 96.7 passer rating.

So much for the ?running game opening up the passing game? theory.

If the Packers fail to even average 3.0 YPC (13 games), Rodgers still has a 103.6 passer rating. When they average over 5.0 YPC (11 games), which is supposed to signify great rushing, Rodgers has a 100.8 passer rating.

See the big picture? No matter what Green Bay does on the ground, the Packers win and lose depending on Rodgers and the defense. His passing performances are still usually great and independent of their rushing ability.

Initial evidence points to the running game and passing game being independent of each other. If an offense wants to be one-dimensional, it can be successful as long as they have the right talent and mindset for it like Green Bay.

Some of you who know me or follow me on Twitter might have heard me complaining about Ian being out-of-town on business last week. ?I complained a lot. ?The kids seemed to sense that something was up and they acted accordingly ? ?you know by treating me like a wounded?wildebeest?surrounded by a pride of lions.

Thoroughly prompted and prepared, Ian ?graciously? ?agreed? to take the family reigns for the day yesterday. ?I needed a freaking break like it was nobody?s business. ?So he woke up with the kids, fed them something that I assume could pass as breakfast, got them dressed and took them out to the park. ?They giggled as they put on their shoes in assembly line fashion. ?They happily waved goodbye to me as they headed to the playground.

Twenty minutes later I received a text with this photo:

Calm, collected, contemplating how much he loves life

When they returned nearly three hours later everyone was all smiles. ?What the what?

Five hours and they seemed to be more jolly and bonded than ever before. ?Yet every day during the week, the moments were all about survival. ?Each 24-hour cycle was a medley of meltdowns, mutinies and maladies.

Let me give you a rundown of a typical day:

1. ?Bouncing on my bed as I cook?those little ingrates homemade pancakes.and?anticipate who will draw first blood.

2. ?A seven minute wordless meltdown over the shirt I picked out for Gavin. ?I used the time to put together extra snacks.

3. ?Throwing shoes and socks as I try to get them ready to go outside.

4. ?Chloe attempting to run away from me on the street anytime I let go of her hand.

5. ?Gavin insisting I hold his hand anytime I hold Chloe?s hand, which means I have to push the double stroller with my torso.

6. ?After a perfectly lovely playdate and appropriate warnings that we would need to leave in X amount of time, Gavin running away from me and hiding under his playmate?s bed.

7. ?Standing on the backseat of the cab on the entire ride home from said playdate.

8. ?Jumping up and down in the bathtub.

9. ?Declaring they are starving (grunts from the baby, high drama from the boy) exactly 8 minutes before bedtime.

10. ?Further delays of bedtime by Chloe asking for another book and Gavin needing his covers and some water. ?I wanted to scream ?Hey, maybe you wouldn?t be so dehydrated if you didn?t demand a full blanket when it?s August and 82 degrees in your bedroom!? but instead I just fetched the requested provisions.

By 9pm I was in a pile of my own mess ? food, toys, tears, sweat and probably some urine. ?There were a lot of tears.

But then after their ideal Sunday I thought, ?maybe the kids have turned a corner.? ?Maybe they are learning to enjoy the routine we?ve discovered in our new neighborhood? ?I woke up this Monday morning full of hope.

Maybe I?m a naive dope of a mother.

Look at these two. They are certainly plotting my destruction.

?Wait, don?t let her see us smiling,? they conspire.

He says we're in a long distance relationship but I disagree, I think it has to be about 80 miles? For example, I'd say Manchester to Birmingham is long distance, but Manchester to Liverpool isn't. I asked a friend and she said as a general rule it's anywhere over an hour away, or anywhere you can't get one bus to. (I disagree with the second part - for me it's two bus journeys to her house and she only lives ~10 miles away!) Thoughts?
