CES 2012 Likely to Bring New Android Devices and Windows Phones

The Consumer Electronics Show starts next week in Las Vegas, and there will be quite a bit of smartphone-related news coming out of this giant tradeshow. Expect announcements related to Android OS 4.0, Windows Phone, and LTE.

The first device with the latest version of Google's operating system debuted from Samsung late last year, and other companies are going to want to catch up. A strong possibility is the Motorola Droid 4, whose release was recently pushed back, likely to have Android OS 4.0 pre-installed. HTC is almost certainly not going to be left out.

The U.S. debut of the Nokia Lumia 710 from T-Mobile has been scheduled for right before CES begins, giving Americans their first shot at Nokia's new line of Windows Phones. In addition, there have been unconfirmed reports that some U.S. carrier will commit to the more powerful Nokia Lumia 800 at this tradeshow -- and this version might sport 4G LTE. The rumored Lumia 900 could make an appearance as well.

More 4G Smartphones
A fairly safe assumption is that the wraps will come off more models with 4G LTE. AT&T currently offers only two smartphones with the high-speed data networking service, and more are surely in the offing. Among the contenders is an LTE-enabled version of the Samsung Galaxy Note from AT&T.

Sprint is at an awkward point: it has announced it's changing from using WiMAX to LTE for its 4G service, but is still months away from matching the change. It has a press event scheduled for CES, it could be one last WiMAX-based handset, but it could be something else.

Apple does not participate in CES, so don't expect to hear much iPhone-related news. There's unlikely to be any new developments from RIM at this trade show, as its still many months away from releasing the first smartphones running its completely refreshed operating system, BlackBerry 10.
