PHOENIX, Ariz. Feb. 27, 2012 The 9th annual Seena Magowitz Celebrity Golf Classic raised $553,443 for pancreatic cancer research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) through the Seena Magowitz Foundation.

These funds will go toward new international clinical trials run by TGen's Pancreatic Cancer Research Team.

This was the first time that major retailers, producers and suppliers in the mattress industry longtime supporters of pancreatic cancer research came together at the landmark Arizona Biltmore for the annual Seena Magowitz tournament.

More than 200 golfers took to the links Dec. 3, 2011, followed by an award luncheon, at which Roger E. Magowitz, President and co-founder of the Seena Magowitz Foundation, challenged everyone, the way he challenges himself.

"If not me, then who?" said Magowitz, a Scottsdale resident who for nearly a decade has championed research into finding a cure for pancreatic cancer, a disease that took the life of his mother, Seena, in 2001. "The 'who' is each one of you in this room," he said. "The 'who' is your business and your friends. The 'who' is an entire mattress industry united to fighting pancreatic cancer. I've never heard of any entire industry fighting a disease. We can beat this disease."

Magowitz, a long-time industry retailer, now is charitable advisor for Houston-based Mattress Firm, who has become a major sponsor.

Steve Stagner, President and CEO of Mattress Firm, a leading national bedding specialty retailer, served as Honorary Tournament Chairman: "This year's Seena Magowitz Classic provided us with a great opportunity to rededicate our commitment to putting an end to pancreatic cancer."

Michael Bassoff, President of the non-profit TGen Foundation, expressed his deep gratitude for the significant contributions made this past year by Roger Magowitz and Steve Stagner.

"In our fight against pancreatic cancer, there is no more powerful ally than Roger Magowitz, whose own commitment has initiated many incredible partnerships within the home furnishings industry," Bassoff said. It starts the moment I get a speaking engagement with the meeting planner letting people know I'll be coming and my posting the event to my website upcoming appearances. There are several ways to maximize the promotional possibilities.

Once booked, send a photo, bio, and a description of the talk. This keeps the meeting planner and her team excited. Ask if they have a newsletter where you could send a little information about yourself and maybe some teasers of your upcoming talk.

Prepare to connect with the audience and build relationships. Have tip sheets, bookmarks, or other handouts to give them they will want to keep. This keeps you in their mind after the meeting. Invite listeners to connect on social networking or by ending one talk with a teaser about a possible future talk.

Make the most of your book table when speaking. Give some bargains at your book table, make it attractive, and help the audience understand the books. You can group similar books, use a digital picture frame as a display that showcases the titles and what's inside each title, and have that be the place for picking up the freebies so people will need to stop by the table.

Each book sold is an opportunity to connect. Add a bookmark, letter, or tip sheet inside the books. These can share the story behind the book, information about you, and ideas on using the book. If I'll be in a different area than my home I check out the radio of the area and send a press release announcing where I'll be speaking and the topic. When the media picks up on it and schedules an interview I let the meeting planner know so her audience can tune in and pass the word along.

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? The nations that make up the Friends of Syria group will call Friday for the United Nations to begin planning a Syria peacekeeping mission once the regime agrees to a cease-fire, a senior diplomat said Friday.

The United States, European and Arab nations were set Friday to demand that Syrian President Bashar Assad agree to an immediate cease-fire and allow humanitarian aid into areas hardest hit by his regime's brutal crackdown on opponents, or face as-yet unspecified punishments and an increasingly emboldened and powerful armed resistance.

Assuming he agrees now, after ignoring numerous similar demands, the UN would then send in a peacekeeping force with the permission of the ruling authority in Syria, whether it is Assad or a successor. The Friends of Syria, meeting Friday in Tunisia, have no more leverage than in previous attempts, either as individual nations or through the United Nations, to make Assad leave. But the diplomat said the demand by the nearly 70 nations involved in the group will simply increase pressure on Assad to see that his demise is inevitable.

The language in the statement will allow UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to begin recruiting nations to join the peacekeeping force, billed as a non-military operation, and start identifying its mandate.

The plan is also designed to signal Russia and China, the two nations that have consistently opposed any foreign intervention in Syria, that their continued support of Assad could leave them out of business and diplomatic opportunities in what the group hopes will be a new Syria.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague described the Syrian government as a "criminal regime" as he arrived at the conference and said he was meeting with the opposition umbrella group, the Syrian National Council, boosting their stature.

"We will also intensify our links with the opposition," he said. "We will treat them and recognize them as a legitimate representative of the Syrian people."

"I hope those countries will take note of this strength of international feeling and support that we are seeing here in Tunis," Hague said about Russia and China. "There are more than 60 countries coming together, because it means that they are increasingly isolated in their views."

Alexei Pushkov, a Russian lawmaker, said Friday after meeting Assad that the Syrian president sounded confident and demonstrated no sign he would he step aside. Pushkov warned that arming the Syrian opposition would fuel civil war.

For their part, the Syrian National Council has welcomed the conference as part of their call for a peaceful transition to a democratic regime.

"This conference will help the Syrian people, the revolutionaries, I think; they will give us the power as a national council, a political umbrella for the revolution inside Syria," said Haithem al-Maleh, executive director of the group.

As the conference began Friday, about 200 pro-Syrian demonstrators tried to storm the hotel. The protest forced Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to be diverted to her hotel, delaying her appearance.

The protesters, waving Syrian and Tunisian flags, tussled with police and carried signs criticizing Clinton and President Barack Obama. They were driven out of the parking lot by police after about 15 minutes.

On Thursday, the Friends of Syria worked out details of the demands in London as the former UN chief, Kofi Annan, was named to be a joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to deal with the crisis.

Russia and China reiterated their opposition to an international resolution. Both nations say they support a "speedy end" to the violence, but they have vetoed two U.N. Security Council resolutions backing Arab League plans aimed at ending the conflict and condemning Assad's crackdown.

Diplomats said Assad's continued failure to comply with international demands would result in tougher sanctions and predicted that his opponents would grow stronger unless he accedes and accepts a political transition that would see him leave power.

If Assad doesn't comply, "we think that the pressure will continue to build. ... I think that the strategy followed by the Syrians and their allies is one that can't stand the test of legitimacy ... for any length of time," Clinton told reporters in London after meeting about a dozen of her foreign minister colleagues to prepare for the Tunis event.

"There will be increasingly capable opposition forces," she said. "They will, from somewhere, somehow, find the means to defend themselves as well as begin offensive measures."

Clinton and others ruled out any overt, direct lethal military aid to Assad's opponents, but her comments indicated that such steps were at least being considered if not already being done.

A draft of the Tunis conference's final document obtained by The Associated Press calls on "the Syrian government to implement an immediate cease-fire and to allow free and unimpeded access by the United Nations and humanitarian agencies to carry out a full assessment of needs in Homs and other areas."

Homs, Syria's third-largest city, has been under a fierce government attack for nearly three weeks.

The draft, which is still subject to change, also demands "that humanitarian agencies be permitted to deliver vital relief goods and services to civilians affected by the violence." More than 5,400 people have been killed in the nearly year-old uprising.

Meanwhile, Tunisia's presidential spokesman, Adnan Mancer, told the AP in an interview ahead of Friday's meeting that the North African country will propose a political solution to the Syrian crisis that includes deployment of a peacekeeping force and Assad stepping down from power.

The political transition would be akin to what happened in Yemen, where president Ali Abdullah Saleh quit in favor of his deputy after widespread protests. The Arab League already has made similar calls on Assad.

To spur negotiations in that direction, the Arab League and United Nations on Thursday jointly appointed Annan, the former U.N. secretary-general, to be their special envoy to Syria with a mandate to bring an end to the violence and promote a peaceful political solution.

Annan will work on bringing an end to "all violence and human rights violations, and promoting a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis," the two bodies said in a statement.

He will work with the government and opposition to forge "a peaceful Syrian-led and inclusive political solution that meets the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people through a comprehensive political dialogue between the Syrian government and the whole spectrum of the Syrian opposition," the statement said.

American officials accompanying Clinton to the Friends of Syria meeting said the group would make clear to Assad that his regime has a moral obligation to end the shelling of civilian areas and allow assistance into the country. The burden is on Assad to respond to the demands of the international community, they said.

"The efforts that we are undertaking with the international community ... are intended to demonstrate the Assad regime's deepening isolation," Clinton said. "Our immediate focus is on increasing the pressure. We have got to find ways of getting food, medicine and other humanitarian assistance into affected areas. This takes time, and it takes a lot of diplomacy."

Several nations have proposed creating protected corridors through which humanitarian relief could flow, but it was not clear whether a consensus could be reached on the matter, as such a step almost certainly would require a military component.

"There is no military option at the moment on the table, and as I have said before, France could not envisage such an option without an international mandate. It's a clear and constant guideline," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said after discussions in London.

Hague, the British foreign secretary, said military intervention was very unlikely, noting that "the consequences of any outside intervention are much harder to foresee."

More workable, officials said, would be a cease-fire such as the one proposed by the International Committee of the Red Cross, which is calling for a daily two-hour break in fighting to provide aid.

Fuller Brush Files for Bankruptcy Protection After 'Reboot ...

Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) ? Fuller Brush Co., founded in 1906 and known for its door-to-door salesmen, filed for bankruptcy less than two months after saying it had ?completely rebooted itself.?

The cleaning-products company, based in Great Bend, Kansas, listed assets and debt of as much as $50 million each in Chapter 11 documents filed yesterday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan. CPAC Inc., Fuller?s parent company, also sought court protection from creditors.

Fuller Brush said Jan. 3 that 2012 would be a ?landmark year? as the company introduced a new marketing campaign, products, distribution channels and a revamped website.

Alfred C. Fuller began what became Fuller Brush in his sister?s New England home, according to the company website. The company?s factory near Great Bend, completed in 1973, turns out more than 2,000 products, Fuller Brush said.

The company was highlighted in the 1948 Columbia Pictures Corp. comedy ?The Fuller Brush Man,? starring Red Skelton and Janet Blair, according to IMDB.com. Publicity shots show Skelton carrying an armful of mops, cleaners and brushes on his door-to- door rounds.

The case is The Fuller Brush Co. Inc., 12-10714, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).

There are two primary methods of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, the meta-model and the Milton model, both created by NLP founders, Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Whilst the meta-model purposely specific, the Milton model (inspired by 20th century psychiatrist and hypnotist, Milton H. Erickson) instead utilises vague and imprecise language that encourage the mind to generate its own meaning of what has been said.

The Milton Model can be used in a variety of ways, including helping to overcome fears and to become a much more confident and therefore persuasive person. The model works very similarly to hypnotism in that the language used by the therapist speaks to the subconscious mind.

The Milton model is used to ?trick? the mind, a technique known as effective hypnotic suggestion. The mind is indirectly instructed or ordered to react or think in a certain way, which therefore means the hypnotherapist must use deliberately vague commands hidden in their speech.

For example, for someone who is scared of public speaking, instead of the hypnotist saying ?When you give your presentation, you will not be scared? they might say ?When it comes to speaking in public, you may start to feel more confident?. Through suggestion and the use of vague, indirect phrases, the hypnotist is saying exactly the same thing but in a way that?s not obvious. This less authoritative method allows the person to fill in the blanks, which has proven to be much more effective than demanding language.

For example, many people are scared of speaking in public or giving presentations. So instead of the hypnotherapist stating that ?When you give your presentation next week, you will not be scared?, they would put it much more indirectly, saying something like ?When you come to speaking in public, you may start to feel much more confident?. This much less authoritative type of language leaves the person to fill in the blanks, which is proven to be a much more effective method than using demanding language. Commands put much more indirectly are still registered by the subconscious mind, but instead of trying to force the subconscious mind (which can?t be done), that part of the mind is choosing to accept it.

An abandoned man died from exposure to the cold last week in Kirkuk, but his family was not willing to bury him as he was drinking. ?The municipality buried him at last.

Last week, the Kirkuk Police found a body under the first Bridge of the Khasa River in the centre of Kirkuk.? He was from Kirkuk?s Rahimawa neighborhood, but no one claimed his body. ??He was mostly under this bridge or on streets since his family did not let him to go home,? the police said.

Anwar Muhamad, chief of Kirkuk?s Rahimawa Police Station said, ?He had become drunk after drinking a lot of alcohol, fell under the bridge and died in the cold.?? The initials of this man were A.A.? He was 40-years-old and his body was sent to the Medicolegal hospital without the presence of any family or relatives.

In Kirkuk, like most of the other cities and provinces of Iraq, people consider alcohol as a social and religious taboo. ?A.A. was the latest victim of this view, where his family abandoned him even in death. ?According to what was received to Kirkuk Now from his relatives, A.A. was in despair from his early childhood, and not being involved with the children on streets. ?He did not have many friends even when he was a young man.

He was separated with his wife for an unknown reason, and his family life disintegrated.? He became a loyal friend of drinking alcohol later, walking on the streets of the city. ?A.T. was one of his relatives, who said that ?Once he separated from his wife, he drank a lot, which became a tension point between him and his relatives.?? He added, ?Drinking led to abandoning him by his relatives.? ?His family tried to hand him over to police many times before dying.? When he died, the police called the family but they responded with, ?Let the municipality bury him.?

RIO DE JANEIRO?? English speakers get their moment in the Carnival sun on Monday as a wild, Beatles-themed street party shakes it up, baby, with a samba swing to "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da."

"Sargento Pimenta," Portuguese for "Sergeant Pepper," is one of more than 400 raucous street parties that spring up throughout Rio de Janeiro during Carnival season. Enter Sargento Pimenta, the brainchild of Gustavo Gitelman, a music lover and doctor by trade.

Gitelman quickly rounded up an enthusiastic group of Beatles aficionados ? so many, in fact that the Fab Four became more of a Fab 70 at the party's debut last year.

The group gives the Beatles repertoire a Brazilian tweak, adapting "All My Loving" to the peppy beat of a traditional Carnival "marchinha," or march, and infusing "Hard Day's Night" with a Rio funk sound. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" morphs into a samba. Even the melancholic "Hey Jude" is spiked with an infectious upbeat energy.

Our county training was pretty neutral between sugar and bitter coating, but the state training was 100 percent bitter-coated. They only said bad things, to the point that one man in class asked if there was not any thing at all good they could say. It was horrifying. Plus they showed a movie about a grandmother who fostered her grandson and he set fire to the house, it was completely burned down, and she had to put him in a psych facility. It was all very depressing and scary. My daughter (adopted from foster care) actually did set a fire in her room once because a voice told her to -- I couldn't say I hadn't been warned in training! ha!

I never trained FPs but I was called in a few times to be an example foster parent to classes. I think the trainer was really good about finding foster parents to exemplify issues she wanted to teach about. For example when I was taking the training one of the foster parents she brought in to talk to us was a Moslem and talked about having a different religion than a foster child. And when I was brought in to talk to the class she encouraged me to tell them about the potential adoption placement that I refused to take simply because the child had a disability that while having normal intelligence, made her bad at math. So I guess I was to show that the county really wants foster-to-adopt parents to say 'no' to placements that they are not comfortable with. She also had an adoptive mom of fetal alcohol affected children talk to the class.

Editing this to add..one thing we did not get in class was a chance to talk to adults who had been in foster care. I love watching those kind of videos on YouTube, and when I first considered adopting from foster care and talked about it at work, I found out from a coworker that he was adopted from foster-care and that was really really nice because I knew what a great guy he was and how much he loved his adoptive parents.
